Lettere scritte dal marzo 1927 all’ottobre 1928 alla moglie Francesca\, prima dal carcere di Regina Coeli\, poi dalla clinica dove verrà trasferito per le condizioni precarie di salute. De Gasperi è stato condannato a quattro anni di carcere per tentato espatrio clandestino. In carcere De Gasperi ha più di 45 anni\, proviene da un’esperienza politica importante: eletto prima al Parlamento di Vienna poi\, dopo la guerra\, a quello italiano\, è stato presidente del gruppo parlamentare del Partito Popolare\, per poi sostituire alla segreteria del partito don Luigi Sturzo. In carcere è un alternarsi di ribellione e speranza ma anche di depressione e talora di disperazione.
